NESTING BOX MIX FOR HAPPY HENS

When you’re planning and planting your kitchen garden, grow some aromatic herbs and flower petals to create a calming nesting-box mix for your feathered friends. It makes the coop smell fresher, helps deter pests, and the aromatherapy benefits make happier, healthier hens. Include any or all of the following:

  • Basil

  • Catnip

  • Calendula

  • Fennel

  • Lavender

  • Lemon Balm

  • Marigolds

  • Mint

  • Nettles

  • Parsley

  • Pineapple Sage

  • Rose petals

  • Thyme

  • Yarrow

Use fresh in the spring and summer, then harvest and dry them in bunches hung upside in an airing cupboard or closet until completely dry. Crush the leaves and petals slightly and store in an airtight container for use throughout the fall and winter.
